Example originals by famous artists costing only a few thousand dollars/euro

Artists don’t create only large paintings. A lot of drawings, lithographs, studies and other minor pieces are available on the market, if you know where to look. These are beautiful to display in your home, as well as excellent investment opportunities.

Pablo Picasso: Danseuse, 1952

  • Signed lithograph folio from one of his numerous sketches

  • In 2005, pieces from this series cost around 800usd/euro. They are always in demand and their prices are constantly rising

Henri Matisse: Icarus, 1954

  • Handmade collage/graphic series made by the artist in a limited series

  • Matisse is one of the most recognisable artists and this is one of his most famous motifs. Worth under 1.000$ in 2005, it is expected to double or triple in price in the next decade.

Salvador Dali: Hell canto, 1972

  • An original lithograph made and signed by Dali in his final years

  • Dali is one of the most well known artists in the world and this piece is in his very distinct style. It cost only 1.500$/euro ten years ago and is always in stable demand.

Comparison of an index of art prices (artprice.com) with the S&P since 2000, showing that art is consistently outperforming the stock market even during times of instability.

This is because of basic supply and demand. More and more people want to own an original Picasso, a Matisse or a Dali, but there are only so many of them available. Therefore, prices of originals by major artists will always rise.

Additionally, art investors value the ability to discreetly move pieces around, pass value on to the next generation and enjoy the opportunity to use it as a tax credit.

What kind of art do you showcase?

I select minor works by major artists that everyone knows, costing between 1.000 and 5.000dollars/euro. I prefer pieces that represent an artist’s distinct style - so they will be instantly recognisable even to a non-expert. That insures there will always be a market for them

Why buy an original art piece?

Most importantly, you should enjoy it. Original art is a great addition to every interior design, it shows sophistication and status, and is a great conversation starter. Then, you should consider holding on to it for a number of years. The artworks were specifically selected for their price to increase gradually over time.

Where do the pieces come from?

All pieces are sourced from reputable galleries with decades of good standing and come with certificates of authenticity. I am able to offer them to you because I am being notified about them by the gallerists that I’ve met during my career.

How to sell a piece you own for profit?

It’s easy if you purchased a piece by a major artist. You can visit any art gallery and they will be happy to make you an offer. You can also list your artwork on a number of specialised online platforms for selling art. Additionally, you can always contact me and I can provide you with additional resale options.

Are you sure these are originals?

Every piece is accompanied by three things: a certificate of authenticity by a gallery of note and/or the artist’s estate; a reference to a catalogue of record where the artwork is listed. Works of all the major artists are officially logged in these. Proof of past ownership is also provided.

Why isn’t everyone already doing this?

Informed investors already are - and have been making solid returns for decades. However most people do not know it is possible to find relatively cheap pieces by famous artists, or don’t know what to buy. The aim of Edward’s List is to help you bridge this information gap, so sign up now!
